A mechanic friend of mine suggested that I take out the thermostat and just run the engine without it, due to the fact that I was running hot (180) with a new one. I know that the water jacket needs to be cleaned out, but I wanted to wait for the off season, because this will be a big job. Most of the studs look rusted and I picture breaking some off as I try to get the side plate off. I am raw water cooled on the Chesapeake, and I run at about 120-140 without the thermostat. We tend to pull our boats out of the water in November, but if the water gets to cool I can always pop the thermostat back in. Any thoughts or has anyone else done this before? This off season, I plan to first acid flush and then take off the side plate if the acid flush does not work. KC
