I had a A-4 that developed a leak in the exhaust riser that extended above the engine. The raw water that sat in the water jacket corroded through the exhaust tube so the water would drip into the exhaust tube and then into the 4th cylinder. If your exaust system sits above the engine, you should start by looking there.
