Before using the starter to turn the engine over as suggested by Steve Kaminsky, use a hand crank to turn the engine. This will reduce the chances of breaking the starter if the engine is gummed up with old oil and rust. Don't forget to shut the cooling water seacock while cranking to avoid filling the exhaust system with water which can back right up into the engine. When the engine starts, immediately turn the seacock to open.
