Subject:   Transmission slips

Message Posted

I am purchasing an Ericson 29 (1976) with an A4 engine. The transmission slips when power is applied in forward.
Question 1.
A mechanic adjusted the "Clutch" up 3 notches and thought he fixed it. It still slips when power is applied in forward. He said after it is in the water again (being painted) he will adjust more and that will fix the problem. Is it possible there is a more serious problem than needs attention?

Question 2.
I checked the compression and it was 55-65 on all cylinders. When I added some WD-40 to #4 it jumped up to 125 psi. The mechanic told me I must have a defective gage because the engine wouldn't start cold like it does with compression at 55-65. Is he correct?

3)If all else fails...does anyone have a rough idea of how much does it cost to get the engine removed, rebuilt and replaced?
Sleepless in Seattle....JIM
