I've come across an A4 installation in a 1970 Tartan 34c which seems a little fishy to me. I'm not a mechanic, so this is strictly from the viewpoint of a novice. I was cleaning the bildge recently and found two stainless shims, both of which have probably not been on the engine in a long time. At first I thought they might have just been dropped into the bilge by accident when someone was installing the engine or adjusting it's orientation. Then it occurred to me that they might have slipped out of place by the engine moving or vibrating, so I checked all 4 engine studs. All four are double-nutted, but only one has the nuts tightened all the way down, which I ascertained by feeling the washer under the nuts. The remaining three sets of nuts are up from the top of the washer by at least the thickness of one of those shims, if not more, although the nuts are tight to each other. Is this correct mounting procedure for a motor? Shouldn't it be locked down tight so as to prevent movement in any direction? Is it possible that those shims vibrated out over a period of years? Other than what I think is sympathetic vibration at some specific rpms over about 1800 (in forward, with the existing prop, I can only get about 2100 max) this engine seems to idle and motor up through the rpms very smoothly, with no problems.
