Hi Everyone, Thanks for the information on replacing the head and the head bolt sequence. Well, when I removed the head I found tons of black sludge blocking the water jackets, and more under the thermostat. In addition, the head has a rust through hole on the bottom plate under the thermostat housing. I just purchased the boat, as is, ran a quick eng check at dry dock with a bucket, had the valves adjusted, ran her out to the mooring, and the first time I when to get under way, after 2 minutes, blew what I thought and everyone else thought was a blown head gasket. It started good, ran good for the short time it ran, and had plenty of power. What I did to get buy was to take out the No 1 spark plug and disconnected the distributor wire, I only used it this way for a few minutes if i needed it to get to the mooring. I never ran it long enought to see if it overheated. I had excellent water out the exhaust, but after reading some of the post figured out it must have been from the bypass hose, due the the solid clogging of the water jackets. I guess I could clean out the jackets, take the side plate off and clean out the sluge around the cylinders, purchase a different head, and put it back together. Also the exhaust manifold drain plug was broke, held in by a couple of threads. Maybe we'll just throw in a new exhast manifold while I'm at it. Does everyone have any ideas? I would be very interested in suggestions. I figure my options are: 1. Get the parts and fix what I got. 2. Buy a rebuilt A4. 3. Replace the engine with a diesel. 4. Sail to my new mooring, anchored with a used A4. And you thought you had problems.. :) . Thanks for letting me vent, Al.
