Dear Jim:
It sounds like a timing or fuel problem.
Check the timing. Also, the advance weights in the distributor may be rusty thereby not allowing the timing to advance. Clean them and lighty lubricate them.
It might also be a clog fuel filter (if you have one, which you should) or dirt in the main jet of the carburetor.
