If it is saltwater it must be removed, cranking the engine and flooding the exhaust. It is freshwater cooled so is it antifreeze? Check the heat exchanger. If it is not low engine integrity should be OK. Weak spots on the A-4 are headgaskets and rust through on the exhaust valve bowls. Sounds like it came in through the exhaust and if it is salt water a couple oil changes are needed.
