My local marine engine parts store sold a thick fiberglass tape about 3" wide that was not particularly expensive and certainly not aluminized and it works fine. The problem I see with the repair type tape is that it is thin and you will have to use a lot of layers to get it thick enough to do any good. You will need something like a quarter inch thickness total when you are done. With the tape I used you can get that by just overlapping the wrap.
