Paul, I just finished my son's A-4. The rebuild with machine work, new carb, water pump and alternator was less than $2000.00. It took an actual 10 hrs of work over a 2 week period ( machine shop time ect,) We got raped for parts as we went through a Universal dealer all the parts are Victor gaskets and Federal Mogul bearings and rings. Available at Car Quest for 1 third the cost. Moyer is a great company but the also get high prices for some thing (rings $85. at Car quest $27.50).
If you decide to do it yourself have the block boiled along with the manifold, sleeve the cyls and resize the rods, don't foget cam bearings.
If you can read Moyers book and are moderately mechanical you should be fine. FWIW
