Not only does the gasket perform the function of sealing the joint betwen the plate and the pump, but it also provides the proper clearance for the impeller to rotate within it's chamber. It is important to use a "proper" gasket of the correct thickness, therefore. As an aside, if the inner surface of your plate is worn from the previous impeller, you should replace the plate, or hone it smooth.
