Depending how your boat is wired it should be something like this:

Coil (+) terminal:

color unknown - wire going to oil pressure safety switch (if you have an electric fuel pump).

Purple - goes to (B)attery terminal on ignition switch. This wire brings power (12 volts) to the coil and to the other devices attached to the (+) terminal.

color unknown - wire going to alternator regulator "+" (next to aux terminal).

Coil (-) terminal:

color unknown - wire to distributor points or electronic pick-up.

grey - to tachometer (if so equipped).
