I hear a higher pitch noise in the reverse gear as opposed to the forward gear. Is this normal or is something wearing out?

The A-4 is in a '78 Catalina 30 and I don't think it has ever been overhauled. I've had the boat for 1.5 years and have not noticed any change in the noise or evidence of trouble. Should I worry?
