I have a 1973 Columbia-30 Shoal keel that has an Atomic-4 with the Walther Vee Drive and a 2:1 reduction. When I bought the boat in 1983 the former owner said that the #2 cylinder was a little light compression wise but since the engine has performed acceptabley all these years I let it go. It sounds and behaves well in the idle range and I usually cruise at about 4 knots at 950rpm. Above 1000 rpm the engine starts to vibrate a bit and I seldom run it above 1000 rpm. When I push it to 1500-1600 it pushes the boat to hull speed but sounds like its ready to explode. At 950rpm I burn about 1 1/2 gph which seems like a lot. My compression is as follows 100-450-110-105. I am no mechanic. I can go one of three ways. 1. Send the engine out to be fixed ($3500) Have Moyer Marine ship me an exchange engine ($4500) Try to find and engine to replace my Atomic 4 and use my Vee Drive if there is such a thing. ANYONE GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS?
