Subject:   Leaking Side-plate fix

Message Posted

I have a late model A-4 in my 1974 T34C (34' Tartan) I recently found the side plate or inspection plate (or whatever you might call the plate on the right side of the engine to which the alternator bracket attaches) was leaking. I expected to have an easy fix by simply replacing the gasket. Three of the bolt holes in the block were stripped. Not wanting to lose any metal by tapping up to the next size, I put studs through the holes and nutted them from the inside. I also made a rubber gasket the size of the plate to cover the entire inside of the plate in hopes of keeping the plate from corroding further. I sail in salt water! Anyone ever tried either of these things? How'd it work? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
