Below is a direct quote from Don Moyer's website:
"If your compression is normal, you can usually assume that your valve stem to valve tappet clearance is OK. In any case, the valve adjusting procedure is described in Part 2 of our service and overhaul manual. Preliminarily, you set each piston to top dead center of its compression stroke, and then set the valve stem to tappet clearance in that cylinder (.012" for exhaust valves and .010" for the intakes). The order of valves, starting at either end of the engine, is: Exhaust, intake, intake, exhaust, exhaust, intake, intake, exhaust. It is usually most convenient to start with number one cylinder (at the flywheel end of the engine), and then progress to number 2, then 4, and then 3."
