John:
The following question and answer come from Don Moyer's website under Frequently Asked Questions.
I thought it might be helpful to your if you have recently worked on the carburetor.
Good Luck!

QUESTION 945: Don, Walt Scudder and I called you a number of times regarding cylinders 3&4 not firing and gas in the oil pan. I told you that I would let you know how it was resolved. Simply, the brass tube that connects between the carb and the intake manifold had been connected to the carb. in the wrong place (the aperture under the bowl). This caused the gas to go directly into the manifold rather than being sucked up through the carb. and then to the manifold. The correct aperture was just under the choke housing. I cannot account for how or when this incorrect connection was made, but now 3& 4 are firing and no gas in pan or out the exhaust. Thanks for your efforts to help.
ANSWER: George,
Thank you so much for the follow up on your problem. I would never have thought of the scavenge tube being connected to the bottom of the carburetor bowl instead of the tap directly below the choke valve. However, given that both of the taps are 1/8" pipe taps, I can see how it could happen.
Fortunately, the later versions of the late model carburetor don't have the 1/8" pipe tap drains in the bottom of their bowls, so this problem is not really an issue on those carburetors.
Thanks again,
Don
