Thanks re the extended bolt tip. I did notice that on the Moyer site, not priced at $20; it would have saved me more than $20 worth of aggravation if it had been there to start, although rust and corrosion was an issue, too.
I finally stumbled on the magic wrench combo when re-installing the pump. Socket + 3" extension + u-joint + long extension + rachet or breaker bar. I just had a persistent blind spot while trying to take it out.
It also seems like disassembling things more than once per ten years is a good idea, to stem the accumulation of corrosion (I generally grease or oil bolts during reassembly).
