I had the same thought since we also have a 1971 Mercedes that needs the same stuff. However in an e-mail from The A4 King (Mr. Moyer), I was advised that the lead substitute ISN'T necessary due to the high compression (I think that was it...) of the A4. However he does recommend the Marvel Mystery Oil which, to my un-mechanical mind, is still a mystery but whatever works!
