Subject:   can't start engine

Message Posted

I recently had my Tartan30 trucked down from Maryland to Gulf Shores, AL. After putting it in the water, the engine wouldn't start. It had been dormant for about 2 months, before which it was working. I've only owned it about a year, but the previous owner kept the boat and A4 (late model without electric fuel pump and old ext resist. coil) in reasonably good shape. I am not a mechanic, and after having read the A4 manuals (manufact. and Moyer Marine) as well as many things on this message board I tried several things so far (easy things)...

1) new batteries
2) new spark plugs
3) new coil (relacement of 12V external resistance one)
4) new condenser
5) clean and re-gap points (but not sure distributor is actually working)
6) new lead to cylinder-1 spark plug (contact corroded)
7) new distributor cap (contacts corroded)
8) checked gas in sediment bowl..was very clean and full and had no evidence of any water
9) sprayed starter fluid in flame arrestor (no go)

I think the choke is opening/closing fully, but not totally sure about that. I have not yet tampered with the (mechanical) fuel pump yet...

Short of dismantling the motor to check for big problems (I'd probably sell the motor and/or boat before I commit to something like that), anyone have any other ideas? Thanks in advance...

atomically challenged,
Rich
