From my understanding of the A4 cooling system, you may wish to check the tee fitting on the engine side plate. If it is clogged (like they tend to get) much of the water from the water pump will bypass the engine block and go directly up to the thermostat housing. Thus the cool water from intake will mix with the reduced amount flowing through the block and make guage READ cooler than the engine actually is. In the event of total tee fitting blockage, the engine temperature will read ice cold, when in fact the engine will be overheated. Moyer also sells the checkvalve to put inline with bypass hose for clogged block cooling ports. I pulled the tee off our A4 and the inlet was clogged down to about 1/8". Good Luck, and let us know how you progress this spring.
