I am using a Racor model 110. You can put it anywhere between the tank and fuel pump that is convenient for mounting. I also have a small secondary filter (an automobile type inline filter) mounted between the pump and the carb. I bought a kit from Moyer Marine, but you put it together yourself easily.
Note that most filter/separators you will find have plastic bowls and are intended for diesel or outboard use only. The plastic bowls are not Coast Guard approved for belowdecks installation with gasoline for obvious reasons. The model 110 is all metal as is my secondary filter. West Marine lists the Racor 110 and Moyer Marine also sells an all metal Racor.
