Dear Dave: Voltage drop achieved by several different ways, wire from coil itself could be dropping the voltage, resistor most common but some coils have resistor built into the bottom of them, points running on 12 volts will work but short life span. Check JC whitney catalog under marine, offer transistor ing. kit for delco systems, fits entirely into your dist. and will not only boost plug voltage but eliminate points, easy to install, uses same cap and rotor, less than 70 bucks and will improve cold engine starting and plug life. I've had one for ever, no problems, even though I keep a spare kit for repair just in case.
