You are correct, it is not right. If the gear is engaged and the engine is reved up the centfical force from the very high speed of the armature will throw the armature windings out and ruin the armature, it will also cut up the field windings. long sentence but no more starter. The starter is an off the shelf delco with a rubber part that makes it marine. You can buy the bendix at the local auto parts store as well as the solenoid. They last forever as they are rather oversize for a 30 hp engine. They are also not used much, consider how much you use the starter in your ford, probably more in a week than your good old a-4 in a season.
If one part is worn, the rest deserve at least being checked. Removing the start is a 15 minute job, don't be afraid of it. Remove the end of the starter, the brushes will tell you how long it has been used.
