This is a new one to me.
I recently obtained a "bad" engine. It was a fresh overhaul by someone who was not familiar with a-4's. I pulled the head and the pistons were in backwards. They have an arrow on the top that points toward the transmission. This is backwards for the firing order as number one is at the flywheel. In this condition the engine will use a lot of oil. Apparently someone had it overhauled and it did not work so they replaced it with a diesel. You know better than I if your mechanic was familiar with A-4s.
