Hi charles:

I would think pull of the flywheel cover, on the cast covers there is a small sheetmetal cover in front of the starter. probably easier to pull the starter. I think it is strange that everybody worries about spares including waterpumps and they do not have a hand crank. My old landrover starts just fine with a crank. But alas, I have freshwater cooling and no place to crank it. I know there is an adapter available. The delco starter is oversized for the A-4, in my opinion, so it seldom gives a problem. The brushes are common. You might be ahead to pull the starter, clean up the shaft that the clutch is on and grease it lightly and reinstall it. I did with mine and it saved me a lot of money.
