It is a 1940's design, and a great engine. There is no filter. Indigo makes a kit but it is not a full flow. It only filters the oil from the pressure relief dump but that is good enough for me. Most people say to change the oil every 50 hours and before winter layup if you live in the ice belt. I live in the pacific northwet and sail all year round. My engine is freshwater cooled and I change it every 25 hours. Oil is cheap. If I had a raw water cooled model I would change more often. The boat next to mine is a cal 29 and I do not think this applies to you but the engine can have a max tilt of 14 degrees. At that rate you won't get much oil out of the bottom plug foward starboard and probably not close to all at the plug you probably used near the carb. You should get closer to 3 qts. Raw water cooled engines run about 140 degrees vs 180 so they should be changed more often. Hope this helps.
