You were right, John. No big deal to get it running. It's a testament to this design that an engine can sit outside in a field for the better part of 8 years, then start with a minimum of fuss. Aside from the rebuilt starter and the new carburetor, all I had to do was give it some fresh fuel and free up the throttle cable. Once it started it ran fine. I also adjusted the shift linkage per your suggestion. It's hard to believe that a week ago I was thinking outboard.
