shaft is sticking out of rear of boat and NO prop drive

I have a erickson 32 foot boat with a atomic 4 this week end while geting hom in low wind my engine reved up and I had no Prop drive .
Transmision is fine bit shaft is extended out of back of boat .

What happend ?? how is shaft conected to stuffing Box

Do I have to pull boat for repair ?
