Alternative Alternators?

I need an alternator for an engine I'm rebuilding. (I just can't find where I put the old one)
So, I'd like to get an original Motorola alternator if anyone has one for sale.

But has anyone out there successfully used any other alternators? I don't want to spend a million bucks on a Balmar, but what about equivalent Delco or Mopar alternators... if such a thing exists?
