If your prop turns when sailing in neutral you should certainly put it in gear. I doubt that forward or reverse matters. It does not put that much load on the transmission although, as mentioned in another reply, it can make it difficult to start if cold. If you have a fixed prop in an aperature you will probably want to stop the prop where it creates the least drag. I marked the top of my shaft coupling with some white paint so that I can tell when the prop is aligned correctly. I can then move between neutral and forward until I am able to stop it in the right position.
