The only problem I have had with leaving the transmission in gear is the load it puts on the engine makes it difficult to start the engine with the boat moving. Also, turning the engine off with the transmission in gear makes it hard to get the transmission out of gear. My recommendation is to place in neutral before turning off and then turn off ignition.
