Buy or get hold of a volt/ohm meter (Radio Shack has some inexpensive models). With the ignition on, you should have +12 volts to + side of coil. If not, you most likely have wiring issues. If you are brave and know what you're doing, you can run +12v directly to the + side of the coil for testing purposes and see if engine starts. The - side of the coil should be a short to ground with the points closed. If not, check for continuity to ground starting at the mounting plate for the points and trace it backwards to the - side of the coil.
