The old style A-4's had an external thermostat housing that mounted after the water outlet on the exhaust manifold and bypassed water from the pump inlet.
If the bronze gears appear in good shape they probably are. Worry only if you are having overheating problems. However, most have been replaced by rubber impeller pumps. He is a very good source of parts and has an exelent maintenance and overhaul manual for sale.
