The old style A-4's had an external thermostat housing that mounted after the water outlet on the exhaust manifold and bypassed water from the pump inlet.

If the bronze gears appear in good shape they probably are. Worry only if you are having overheating problems. However, most have been replaced by rubber impeller pumps. For a more expert opinion I suggest you visit www.moyermarine.com. Don Moyer has a forum on the site and also a "Guest Log" page where he will answer questions. He is a very good source of parts and has an exelent maintenance and overhaul manual for sale.
