A friend was successful in running his Atomic 4 with the wrong firing order, but if I remember correctly, it was difficult to get it to idle, even with no load (I'm surprised it ran at all) A test for this is that if it runs erratically at half throttle or more, and doesn't run at lower throttle settings, then the firing order may be wrong. I don't think you can ever get the engine to run well, or idle with it wrong. If it runs well at any slow speed setting, it's likely not the firing order.
