From my own experience, I suspect that it is engaging forward slightly, but not fully, when you are in neutral but just touching the detent for forward. No amount of adjusting seems to help. Advice from Don Moyer was that it is normal and unless you can rig up some sort of stop on your shift linkage you just have to live with it. I have an old style rod linkage with a vertical shift lever. Gravity and bumping can easily cause the lever to drop down to rest on the detent, causing hard starting or a slow creep forward. My solution has to just be aware of it and make sure the lever stays well in the neutral zone. I would like a better solution, but given Don's expertise I doubt there is one.
