An engine that will only run with the choke on is indicating a fuel starvation problem.

Start and check the simple things first, fuel filters, gas tank vents, carburetor idle mixture adjustment, fuel pump output...then move on to a partially blocked main jet in the carburetor.

Some how the engine is not getting enough fuel to run without the addition of the choke.
