Subject:   Leaky water pump

Message Posted

I just replaced my impeller (good thing, the old was was rippled to bits, looked like it was about to go), and now my water pump seems to be leaking, but only when I run the engine. I don't know if it was before, but now it certainly is.

I have put my hand under the engine, and it seems to leak from the forward end of the water pump, not from the plate I removed to put in the new impeller.

When I replaced the impeller, I didn't have any kind of gasket, so I just sealed it steel on steel. I have some liquid gasket onboard that I can use, but I didn't want to much up a seal that didn't need it.

So, I can't decide: did I screw up installing the impeller, or do I need to reseat the seals for the water pump? The water pump base seems to be the source of the leak, but I may be reading this wrong! Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!!!

- Gavin
