Subject:   water pump bolt removal

Message Posted

I have an A-4 in a 1964 Pearson Triton, and I'm trying to remove the Oberdorfer water pump. I've tried a variety of tools, but so far, I can't get a grip on the lower of the two bolts that hold the water pump on.

Can anybody suggest known-to-work tools or techniques for getting that lower bolt out?

The problem, specifically, is getting access to the bolt head with the impeller housing interfering. So far I've failed with a regular socket, a socket on a swivel joint, a box end wrench, and a 'crow foot' socket.

BTW, I would expect English size bolts on a 1964
American made engine--9/16" seems close, but a 14mm socket seems to fit better.
